News

  • My lyric essay “Wrack” is forthcoming in an anthology tentatively titled Anne Bradstreet Now, edited by Abram Van Engen and Mary Eyring, under contract with Oxford UP. I’m excited to be included with numerous prominent contemporary poets in this collection, featuring poetry and prose written in response to the founding mother of American poetry.

  • I attended Yetzirah’s 2024 Jewish Poetry Conference July 1-7 in Asheville, NC. In February I was Yetzirah’s weekly Featured Poet.

  • Late Epistle was a finalist for the 2024 da Vinci Eye award for cover art from the Eric Hoffer Awards.

  • What Woman That Was was a finalist in both the poetry chapbook and narrative poetry categories in the American Book Fest’s 2023 Best Book Awards.

  • I am now the semi-official poetry reviewer-at-large for North American Review. I’m a bit nervous but excited! If you have a new book, especially one that engages with the history or meaning or culture of America, feel free to let me know.

  • Poet Diana Engel and I hosted a semi-monthly poetry reading and open mic series, Poetry on Tap, in 2023-2024 at Greensboro’s Oden Brewing and later at Scuppernong Books. It was a great experience, but because of difficulty finding a long-term workable venue and for other reasons we laid it down after a year.

  • I received an Honorable Mention in the North Carolina Poetry Society’s 2023 Susan Laughter Meyers Poetry Fellowship contest; 5 out of 42 anonymous poetry submissions were recognized.

  • In June 2023 I attended the Society of Early Americanists Conference—my former academic home base—at the University of Maryland as part of a creative panel presenting readings of poetry engaging historical material.

  • My poem “Horizons” was a finalist for the 2022 James Applewhite Poetry Prize and will appear in the Winter 2023 online edition of the North Carolina Literary Review.

  • In 2022 my poem “An Origin Story” was nominated for a Pushcart by Waterwheel Review, and my poem “Border-Crosser” was nominated for a Pushcart by Poetica Magazine. “Metropolitan,” from What Woman That Was, was nominated for a Pushcart by Final Thursday Press.

  • My poem “Bane,” published in ellipsis … literature and art, was co-winner of the 2022 ellipsis Prize, judged by Carolyn Forché.

  • My poem “Fever” was nominated for a Pushcart Prize in 2021 by Lavender Review.

  • My poem “Thicket” received an honorable mention for the Mary Ruffin Poole American Heritage Award from the North Carolina Poetry Society.

I am available for readings from Late Epistle online or within a day’s drive of Greensboro, NC; open to possibilities further afield.

I am also happy to visit historical or Quaker groups or college classes by Zoom (or in person if local) to discuss my book What Woman That Was: Poems for Mary Dyer. No fee, though I’d like it if you purchased at least one copy of the book.

Note that I remain masked in all public settings, including while presenting.
